Balenciaga’s Founder and History
Balenciaga’s founder was Cristobal Balenciaga, who founded the luxury fashion house in 1919 in San Sebastian, Spain. Born on 21st January 1895 in Spain, Cristobal Balenciaga was trained in tailoring as a young boy in Madrid.
In 1919, Cristobal Balenciaga opened his first boutique in San Sebastian, Spain. Soon, the branches of this boutique expanded to Barcelona and Madrid. Famously, the Spanish royal family and the aristocracy preferred wearing designs by Balenciaga. However, Cristobal Balenciaga had to shut down his stores in Spain due to the Spanish Civil War.
Balenciaga then moved to France, where the boutique flourished. Cristobal Balenciaga’s designs were considered revolutionary and highly sought-after. Various presses in France at the time praised his designs, attracting more people at the time to the luxury fashion house.
Balenciaga had such a great reputation then that many people traveled in very risky conditions to Paris during the Second World War to catch a glimpse of Balenciaga’s designs and clothing. Balenciaga was also one of the few companies allowed to operate during the Nazi occupation of France.
Though, it was only after the world war that Cristobal Balenciaga unleashed a wave of astounding creativity through his mesmerizing designs. Cristobal designed various new forms of clothing that became widely famous in no time.
Cristobal Balenciaga breathed his last on 23rd March 1972. He died in Xabia, Spain, and was 77 years old when he passed away.
