Jovenel Moise was an entrepreneur and a politician in Haiti. He was the 43rd president of Haiti, serving in the post from 2017 till 2021 when he was assassinated. He had become the president after he had won the elections in November 2016. He was then succeeded by Claude Joseph.

Jovenel Moise was born to Lucia Bruno and Etienne Moise. His birthplace was Trou du Nord, Nord-Est, Haiti, and his date of birth is 26th July 1968. In July 1974, his family moved to Port-au-Prince, where Jovenel Moise continued his primary education. There, he studied at École Nationale Don Durélin.

After completing his primary education, Jovenel Moise started his secondary education at Lycée Toussaint Louverture. He then also enrolled at the Centre Cultural du College Canado-Haitien to continue his secondary education.

Jovenel Moise’s Entrepreneurial Career

Jovenel Moise’s first business venture was Jomar Auto Parts, a company that is still operational to date. After a year, Jovenel Moise began working on a project related to agriculture. The project was about producing bananas from a plantation that covered more than 25 acres in the Nord-Ouest department.

Jovenel Moise continued to work on various agricultural projects over the years. One of the projects aimed to export bananas and other produce to Germany. However, only two containers were sent to Germany. Nevertheless, this marked the beginning of successful agricultural projects throughout the years, which primarily aimed at improving the agricultural situation of Haiti.

Jovenel Moise’s Political Career

Jovenel Moise was a member of the Tet Kale political party in Haiti. He started his campaign in 2015, in which he mainly promoted agricultural projects and improved the agricultural sector of the country. He also supported various policies that should have been made i.e. policies regarding universal education, environmental protection, and the creation of sustainable jobs.

Jovenel Moise then won the elections of November 2016 with 55.67% of the votes. Thus, Jovenel Moise secured his position as the president of Haiti with this victory. He took office in February 2017.

However, in 2019, there were political unrest and calls for his resignation. This prompted an assassination on the morning of 7th July 2021, when Jovenel Moise and his wife were injured during an attack on their private residence in Petion-Ville. His wife survived the attack, but Jovenel Moise’s gunshot wounds were fatal and became the cause of his death.
